Christmas On Net >> Christmas Flowers >> Lily

It’s Christmas time! It’s the time to bring flowers and greens to deck your home! Since, Christmas celebration takes place in the winter, flowers color up the gloomy winter picture and green adds life and hope to it. The commonest Christmas flowers used for decoration are red poinsettias, white lilies, gypsophalias, and the commonest Christmas greens are mistletoes, hollies and ivy. This page by Christmasonnet deals entirely with the various facts regarding the Christmas lily.

Before knowing the biological facts on lilies, let’s know about the significance of lily in Christmas. The Easter white
lily is the traditional Easter flower that symbolizes Christ’s Resurrection. The large, chaste white Easter lily blooms represent the pure new life that comes by the Resurrection of Jesus. Nowadays, on Eastern morning pure white lilies are used to adorn the churches to pay homage to the loved deceased ones.

As white lilies are associated to Jesus, so it sounds somewhat unusual that lilies would not be used in Christmas celebration. As the white Easter lily is the symbol of purity, artists for centuries have depicted the angel Gabriel coming to the Virgin Mary with a spray of lilies in his hand to herald that she is going to be the mother of the Christ child. According to Roman mythological history of white lily, white lily is connected with Juno, the Queen of gods. It states that when Queen Juno was feeding her baby son Hercules, a few drops of her milk fell on to the earth, which led to the blossoming of the brilliant white lilies.

For years, the gorgeous white chaste Madonna lily was used as the Easter lilies. But, these lilies often failed to blossom during Eastern time, and so was substituted by Bermuda lilies. These are six-part flowers where the three petals and the three sepals are colored alike, and normally do have six stamens. These lilies were first found in the island of Bermuda, and thus it derived its name.

There are also the Amazon lilies that look much similar to that of daffodil flowers and also have a sweet fragrance. These lilies are noted for their perfectly white brilliant blooms. Originating in Columbia, Amazon Lily or Eucharis grandiflora is a member of the Eucharis genus. These white lilies are usually borne in groups of four. The low growing bulb gives rise to star-shaped clusters of pristine white flowers smelling sweet. The flowers seem to look like the heavenly Christmas star, and when bunched together, the sacredness of Christmas comes alive.

Add the festal élan to your Christmas decoration by bringing lilies with long stems, and then simply bunching them with red poinsettias. Christmas lily decoration can also be made by tucking white lilies in green Christmas wreaths, on the apex or branches of the holiday tree, or by simply bunching them in a vase and using as the table centerpiece. The large white flowers also have big, showy leaves that also add the lively touch to the bleak Christmas surrounding. Use lilies in bouquets, corsages, wreaths, etc. and let the festive fervor bloom to its utmost!
