Christmas Palm Trees

Christmas On Net >> Christmas Trees >> Christmas Palm Trees

There are diverse types of palm trees of which the average-sized Christmas Palm Tree is the most striking. Originating in Philippines, the Christmas Palm Tree is indeed a tropical delectation, which heralds bright ideas, promising zephyrs and brilliant sunshine. Adorning promenades and shopping plazas, the attractiveness of the Christmas Palm Tree lies in its vivid red fruit which makes it stand apart from the rest. In fact the lividness of Christmas is tossed away by the verdure of the Christmas Palm Tree, which fructifies in the time of Christmas, especially in the United States.

The thickset Christmas Palm Tree,

scientifically known as Veitchia merrillii, has a height of 6 to 9 meters and a girth ranging between 3 to 4.5 meters. Belonging to the Arecaceae family, the Christmas Palm Tree acquires an arcuate appearance from its stiff lush green foliage to the base of which cling lustrous red fruits that make the tree a visual delight. With leaves which are 30 to 46 cm long, the Christmas Palm Tree is highly vulnerable to the deadly yellowing disease. This delicate variety of palm tree is also unable to endure frost and very high temperatures and therefore should be dealt with great care. While the mature Christmas Palm Trees can somehow bear full exposure to the sun, the tender and immature ones should be kept away from direct sunlight. As far as the soil preferences of the Christmas Palm are concerned, it grows well in loamy, clayey, somewhat alkaline and even on sandy soils. It also passably endures drought and aerosol salt. Be very cautious to protect the juvenile Christmas Palms from scales that thwart their growth and completely destroy them.

The evergreen leaves of the Christmas Palm Tree are arranged either spirally or alternately. It has an erect, unbent, florid trunk which does not sag, but the branches and the trunk require slight trimming for a good shape and a solid form. The insignificant flowers of the Christmas Palm are white and yellow in colors and chiefly bloom in the summer months. The fruits, however, are oval shaped, appealing and very fleshy. In fact it is the fruit that is the most captivating aspect of the Christmas Palm Tree, commonly known as the Manila Palm.
