Hawaiian Merry Christmas

Christmas On Net >> Merry Christmas >> Hawaiian Merry Christmas

It is hard to believe that the Hawaiians, famous as among the most gregarious folks in this world don't believe in loud festivity on Christmas. They say "Mai hilahila", which means "don't celebrate this festival with a lot of pomp and show". Rather be at home and be a perfect family man for at least the day. "Ohana" (family) takes front seat for the day. The main celebration consists of a platter of simple meal, typical Hawiian music with the accompaniment of "Uke"or a guitar with 4 strings. Hawaiians cannot think of enjoyment sans music. Hawaiian Merry Christmas is all about a musical sojourne.

"Jus add yoah slippahs to da pile"is a phrase that means "remove your shoes and leave those at the pile of shoes before the door. "Mele Kalikimaka" is the way how "Merry Christmas" is wished in the Hawaiian Island. The customs of the religious celebration of Christmas on the Hawaiian island came to the island with the Christian missionaries. The religious aspect of the celebration on this island owes a lot to the Christian missionaries. Otherwise, Hawaiian Merry Christmas would have been a kind of hollow celebration lacking religious insight.

Actually, Hawaiians faced problem pronouncing Merry Christmas. The word that they uttered sounded like, Merry Christmas, but it was not exactly Merry Christmas. It sounded like "Mele Kalikimaka".The Hawaiian dialect is much different from the westernized dialect. The English words Merry Christmas could not be uttered by the Hawaiians quite easily. That is why they changed the phrase according to their convenience. Hawaiian Merry Christmas has a different coloring in the island of Hawaii, but the devotion is still their.

Santa does wear a vibrant red outfit over there, but rides a canoe, instead of the sleigh. This canoe is strong enough to carry him across the sea. Being an island country Hawai naturally changed the legend their own way. Snow can be found in this country only during winter and that too on the top of the highest peak of the mountains. Naturally this country hardly has any use of the sleigh. Hawaiian Merry Christmas is celebrated in the typical Hawaiian way.

Christmas was never celebrated in the island of Christmas before the Christtian missionaries reached there. During this time of the year they used to thank the world for providing plenty of food to her inhabitants. The festival of "Makahiki" was mainly celebrated by resting and feasting. It was a 4 months long spell of celebration. No wars were fought during this time. The reason behind not fighting that spell was that Makahiki also meant "year". Hawaiians embraced Christianity, but incorporated some of the customs of Makahiki to the celebration of Christmas. Beside the turkey, there are other dishes which the guests are greeted with, on the island of Hawaii. The foods usually eaten during Hawaiian Merry Christmas are-
  • sushi

  • lumpia

  • tamales

  • manapua

  • poke

  • coconut pudding
